Rape of the Sabines by Giovanni da Bologna
Art. 2245
Known as a 'Grand Tour Souvenir' this bronze study is a perfect reduction of the famous marble sculpture in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. It was customary for the young Victorian gentlemen to return from their educational tour of Europe and the Far East with the obligatory souvenirs of the inspiring beauty and culture that they had witnessed ontheir journey. This bronze group is a shining example of a high quality casting of one of the most famous and lasting images of classical sculpture from the greatest Renaissance artists. Raised on a rouge marble base with turning mechanism the bronze is signed and has an inscribed frontis plaque
