Animalier sculptures by Antoine Louis Barye (1796 - 1875)
Born in Paris he turned to sculpture in 1817 after his discharge from the army and worked in the studios of Bosio and Gros. In1819 he took part in the competition of the École des Beaux Arts where he was runner up. Barye exhibited at the salon from 1827 onwards. In a career spanning half a century he had a prodigious output of bronzes imbued with realism and naturalism, and a meticulous attention to anatomical detail.
